Oshawa trailer fire leaves child dead, 2 others seriously injured

On Oct. 18, 2025, Durham Regional Police Service said officers found a trailer fully engulfed at Elgin Street West and located one child dead with two adults seriously injured.
Authorities, including the Ontario Fire Marshal, are on scene to investigate as the cause, origin and circumstances of the fire remain unknown.
A 22-person firefighting response deployed to the scene Saturday arrived within three minutes and performed a quick fire attack before extinguishing the blaze.
Durham Regional Police Service said Elgin Street West will be closed between Nipigon Street and Park Road North due to the ongoing investigation, and police with victim services are at the scene to support residents.
Oshawa Fire Chief Stephen Barkwell said two firefighters were treated for minor burns and called the incident `Very traumatic for our crews, very traumatic for the community.
