The compromise keeps schools open and lets up to 100 schools send students and staff to an afternoon Union Park rally, with no retaliation for participants.
- On Friday, Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Teachers Union reached an agreement designating May 1 as a 'day of civic action,' keeping schools open while allowing voluntary student participation in rallies and civic activities.
- The Chicago Teachers Union originally sought to cancel classes entirely for national May Day protests, but CPS CEO Macquline King resisted, insisting that 'every minute in the classroom is vital for our students.'
- Parents and community leaders, including those from the Urban Center, have pushed back against the agreement. CPS parent Leonor Arellano said, 'Our children should not be used as political pawns for anyone's agenda,' citing childcare disruptions.
- Under the agreement, the district will provide buses and bag lunches for field trips to a 1 p.m. rally at Union Park. Students in grades 6 through 12 may use one excused absence per school year for a 'civic event' with parental permission.
- Opponents plan to attend the Chicago Board of Education meeting next Thursday to demand further clarity on implementation. CPS and the union also agreed that future May Day observances falling during the work week will become teacher-directed professional development days.
