Chicago Firefighter Seriously Hurt in Extra-Alarm Apartment Building Fire in Rogers Park

About 100 Chicago firefighters responded to the 2-11 alarm blaze that displaced seven residents; the injured firefighter was rescued within a minute and hospitalized in critical condition.

  • On Monday afternoon, a Chicago firefighter fell from the first floor into the basement at 1757 W. North Shore Ave and was rescued within one minute before being transported to Stroger Hospital in serious-to-critical condition.
  • Beginning in the basement, heavy flames at the back of the four-story apartment building spread upward through plumbing shafts, causing a first-floor collapse, Chicago Fire Department Deputy District Chief Kelly Burns said.
  • The Chicago Fire Department raised a 2-11 alarm, bringing at least eight engines, four trucks, two tower ladders, and around 100 firefighters, and crews reached the fire in less than 10 minutes while Squad 2 and Engine 70 aided the injured firefighter’s rescue.
  • Seven apartment residents were left temporarily homeless and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross, and officials said no other injuries were reported.
  • Deputy District Chief Kelly Burns said Rogers Park fires pose challenges because buildings are close and deep, while reports gave control times of around 12:15 p.m. and about 1:15 p.m.
