Chery to build Omoda C4 at Rosslyn plant from 2027
The hybrid version will lead local production, with petrol and fully electric derivatives to follow as Chery expands its South African manufacturing footprint.
On Wednesday, Chinese automaker Chery Group announced it will begin assembling the Omoda C4 crossover SUV at its Rosslyn plant near Pretoria, South Africa, in 2027.
The expansion aligns with Chery's strategy to establish South Africa as its African manufacturing hub, countering slowing growth and intense competition in China's crowded automotive market.
Production will reach 15,000 vehicles during the 2027 ramp-up phase, eventually rising to 50,000 annual units, with the hybrid version leading the local rollout before petrol and electric derivatives follow.
Chery plans a localization program to develop domestic suppliers and increase locally sourced components, aiming to tap South Africa's $15.2 billion automotive market.
The Pretoria facility will eventually assemble a wider range of models, including the Jetour T-Series SUVs and the forthcoming Chery Grootman double-cab pickup, expanding the brand's African footprint.
