Changi Airport Deploys Driverless Tractors for Baggage Transfer After Successful Trials

Changi Airport's driverless baggage tractors operate up to 25 tonnes per trip, enhancing worker safety and efficiency as part of a broader airside automation strategy.

  • On Jan 20, Changi Airport Group put two autonomous tractors into live service between Terminal 1 and Terminal 4, launched by Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling to enhance safety and productivity.
  • Pressure from an ageing workforce and bouts of bad weather pushed adoption as Changi Airport Group said autonomous tractors will free airside workers for last-mile and higher-value tasks.
  • During trials beginning in November 2024, the autonomous tractors logged more than 5,000 test trips with a safety driver until November 2025 and amassed 20,000km mileage without incidents.
  • CAG expects the fleet to free workers from driving tasks and require drivers to be upskilled, while the Aviation Jobs Transformation Report warns up to 30 per cent of roles may face redesign.
  • Six additional vehicles will join Terminal 2 later in 2026, expanding the fleet to 24 by 2027; cybersecurity rules prevent remote steering, requiring on-site teams to clear obstacles despite one operator monitoring two AVs.
