Champions League: Lille Bows Against Galatasaray, Manchester United Dark at Como
Victor Osimhen scored his first Champions League goal of the season as Galatasaray ended Lille’s perfect start and boosted their knockout-stage hopes.
Galatasaray defeated Lille 4-2 at Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Wednesday, securing their first UEFA Champions League victory of the campaign and ending a five-game away losing run in the competition.
Lille coach Davide Ancelotti had insisted on a "collective effort" to contain Victor Osimhen, the 27-year-old striker returning to the club where he earned Player of the Season honors during the 2019/2020 campaign.
Yunus Akg opened the scoring for Galatasaray before Soriba Diaoune netted twice for Lille; Aleksey Batrakov equalized, then Lucas Torreira and Osimhen secured the comeback in the second half.
Osimhen, voted Man of the Match, notably chose not to celebrate his goal against his former club, while the victory ended Galatasaray's five-game away losing run in European competition.
Victory boosts Galatasaray's chances of reaching the Champions League knockout stages after a difficult start to their European campaign, leaving Lille without a point after three matches.
The full results of the Champions League matchday three presented a surprise after Como thrashed Manchester United 4-1 and Calvin Verdonk made his starting debut for Lille.
Lille didn't win on Wednesday 21 October against the Turks of Galatasaray, 4-2 winners at the Pierre-Mauroy stadium, and remains at the bottom of the table with three defeats in three matches. Manchester United had a nightmare night in Como, which outclassed English club 4 to 1.
