Molotov Cocktails Hurled at Refugee Homes in Kulai
Police are investigating the attack under four legal provisions after a house fence burned and no injuries were reported, Johor police said.
On Tuesday, Malaysian police launched a criminal probe after a Molotov cocktail attack targeted a Rohingya settlement in Kulai Besar, Johor at 1.30am, causing a minor fire at a house perimeter fence that was quickly extinguished.
Viral videos circulating online allegedly triggered the attack, as youths challenged the Malay community; Johor police chief Comm Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad confirmed the link to these provocative social media clips.
Police opened two investigation papers under the Penal Code and Multimedia Act, while a Rohingya man in his 30s filed a report denying involvement, claiming his image was used by others without his consent.
Refraining from speculation, Comm Rahaman Arsad urged the public to contact the Johor police hotline at 019-279 2095 or 07-221 2999 to assist the ongoing investigation.
Malaysia, which is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, currently hosts more than 126,000 registered Rohingya refugees through the UNHCR, situating the incident within broader refugee tensions.
