CFB Wainwright fire highlights long, painful process of burn recovery, specialists say
Hospitals can provide backup and temporary skin for 39 hospitalized patients, including 19 in critical condition, after the CFB Wainwright fire.
On Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, a fire at CFB Wainwright, Alberta, hospitalized 39 people, with 19 in critical condition.
Burn specialists in Toronto and Hamilton are preparing to support Alberta colleagues, offering backup patient care and frozen skin from tissue banks managed by Calgary and Edmonton hospitals.
Severely burned patients are immunocompromised and often require isolation to prevent infection, said Dr. Alan Rogers, a burn surgeon at the Ross Tilley Burn Centre at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
Recovery involves multiple surgeries and skin grafts over weeks, creating significant burden on patients and families, said Dr. Marc Jeschke, director of the burn program at Hamilton Health Sciences Centre.
Age and chronic illnesses significantly impact recovery chances; Rogers noted younger, healthy adults can survive burns to 80 per cent of their body if complications like smoke inhalation are managed.
