Central New Mexico Community College Anchors National Launch of the Technician Economy™

On Tuesday, Central New Mexico Community College launched the "Technician Economy" framework at the Close It Summit in Santa Fe, designed to convert innovation into operational capacity and close workforce gaps.
Leaders developed the framework to address the "innovation-deployment gap," where the U.S. continues investing in research but lacks coordinated workforce infrastructure to deploy innovations at scale, restricting opportunities for working learners.
CNM President Tracy Hartzler and Amazon Principal Matt Austin serve as inaugural co-chairs of the Technician Economy Futures Council, which brings together 12 leaders from major employers and community colleges.
The framework focuses on aligning employer demand across regions and enabling colleges to deliver job-aligned training for technicians maintaining mechanical, electrical, electronic, and industrial IT systems.
A national "Technician Economy Playbook" will be released to support communities in building local workforce infrastructure, aiming to create accessible learning opportunities and foster long-term economic mobility.
