Play on: Neale’s Legacy Celebrated at Emotional Big Freeze
The fundraiser drew 51,000 fans and celebrities as FightMND supporters honored the late campaigner’s legacy and pushed for a cure.
On Monday, a record crowd of 88,019 packed the MCG for the 12th annual Big Freeze, the first event held since the death of AFL legend and FightMND co-founder Neale Daniher two weeks ago.
Daniher founded the Big Freeze 13 years ago to raise research funds, dedicating his later years to fighting MND, a condition he famously termed "the beast."
Governor-General Sam Mostyn and TV host Sam Mac joined other celebrities in the ice bath, helping the charity reach its goal of selling 100,000 digital beanies to raise $2.5 million.
Philanthropists Quentin and Kylie Birt donated $40 million at the event, as Melbourne defeated Collingwood in the King's Birthday Clash with Demon Kysaiah Pickett winning the inaugural Neale Daniher Trophy.
Daniher's family continues the fight against the disease, with a state funeral scheduled for Wednesday in Melbourne to honor the legacy of the former Australian of the Year.
