Celebrating International Day of Persons with Disabilities
Saskatchewan commits to removing barriers in employment, education, healthcare, housing, and public life to support leadership by persons with disabilities, under The Accessible Saskatchewan Act.
- On December 3, the Ministry of Youth, Social Development and Seniors recognized the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, with Social Services Minister Terry Jenson saying, `This day celebrates the contributions of persons with disabilities and reaffirms our commitment to building an accessible and inclusive province for everyone.`
- Last year, the Government of Saskatchewan released the province's first accessibility plan, and public sector bodies across Saskatchewan have posted their accessibility plans as required by The Accessible Saskatchewan Act.
- Saskatchewan Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services provides provincewide support and advocacy, and SDHHS said it welcomes government recognition while provincial partners commit to accessible spaces.
- These accessibility plans commit public sector bodies across Saskatchewan to identify, remove and prevent barriers, while officials say advancing accessibility demands action, collaboration and accountability from government partners.
- Across employment, education, healthcare, housing and public life, people with disabilities still face barriers, and this year’s provincial observance stresses that true inclusion requires more than awareness and concrete measures.
