Who was Florence Nightingale and after whom do nurses celebrate their day?

Nightingale lived in the 19th century in Victorian England, she reformed the health care system and was nicknamed "the lady with the lamp" because she constantly visited patients during the night.

This Monday, May 12, 2025, the Hospital of Guadalajara hosts a day on the occasion of the International Nursing Day, in which tribute is paid to Florence Nightingale, considered the founder of modern nursing, and to all professionals in the nursing field.

As every year, Nurses Day on May 12th is intended to focus on nursing and problem areas such as skilled labor shortages, an aging population, and the burdens placed on staff. The specific date was chosen because of the birthday of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale (1820-1910). This year, the demands and appeals are once again diverse.

Nursing is more visible than ever and today, on its International Day, it goes out to Botines Square to share with the population the campaign “Ask your Nurse”, a historic and pioneering action launched by the General Nursing Council (CGE) and the 52 professional colleges, including that of León, which aims to claim the contribution to the health of the population of the 345,000 nurses and nurses in the country (3,400 active in the province).
