SC Directs Karnataka to Comply, Waits a Week to Assess Cauvery Water Releases
The court will review compliance after a week as Tamil Nadu seeks 21.357 TMC more water and Karnataka says it has met release obligations.
- On Monday, the Supreme Court decided to monitor Cauvery water sharing between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, seeking a fresh status report. A Bench headed by Justice Vikram Nath told Tamil Nadu, "It is not that the State is not giving water to you."
- Tamil Nadu, represented by Senior Vaidyanthan, sought the release of 37 TMC of water from August 12 to August 31, arguing that Karnataka's release was "Never voluntary compliance."
- Senior advocates Shyam Divan and Mohan Katarki submitted that allegations of non-compliance were "erroneous," with Divan stating, "We have complied in full, especially considering the fact that this is a distress year."
- Karnataka maintained that releases from the KRS and Kabini reservoirs reached the inter-State border at Biligundlu, measured by the Central Water Commission, as the Supreme Court posted the case to August 24.
- Overcoming worsening Nino conditions and a distress year, Karnataka ensured supply from the Kabini reservoir, bolstered by large inflows from good rainfall in the Wayanad area of Kerala.
