CATL Starts Trial Run at Its New 100 GWh EV Battery Plant
The trial phase will configure and validate equipment before full-scale series production, as CATL says the plant is designed for 100 GWh a year.
- On September 22, 2026, CATL Debrecen officially commenced trial production at its newly constructed cell manufacturing facility after fulfilling all necessary preconditions and regulatory requirements.
- Earlier this year, the Hajdú-Bihar County Government Office ordered a temporary suspension in certain areas due to occupational safety concerns regarding nickel exposure affecting nine employees, prompting CATL to implement rigorous health and safety rectifications.
- Currently, the first phase is in trial production with a 34 GWh capacity, contributing to a planned total annual capacity of 100 GWh; CATL has produced approximately 537,000 battery modules at the site since autumn 2024.
- During the trial phase, engineers will configure, optimize, and validate manufacturing equipment and processes ahead of full-scale series production, while CATL will continuously monitor environmental and safety indicators for submission to Hungarian authorities.
- Once completed, the facility is set to become CATL's largest manufacturing base outside of China, supplying leading European car manufacturers and strengthening the continent's electric vehicle supply chain.
