Carney says six upcoming byelections will likely be spread out
Carney said timing must account for Quebec’s Oct. 5 provincial vote and legal limits that set a 36- to 50-day campaign window.
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Thursday that six upcoming House of Commons byelections will likely be staggered rather than held simultaneously to fill current and upcoming vacancies.
The Quebec provincial election scheduled for Oct. 5 complicates timing, while B.C. Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson and former Bloc Québécois MP Simon-Pierre Savard-Tremblay both formally resigned their seats last week.
Federal rules mandate campaigns last at least 36 days but no more than 50 days, with the earliest a byelection can be called 11 days after the Speaker of the House informs the chief electoral officer.
Additional seats will open soon as former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault, Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, Alexandre Boulerice, and Saskatchewan Conservative Cathay Wagantall plan to resign this summer.
Even if vacancies remain unfilled when the House returns in September, the Liberals would still hold a slim majority of occupied seats, ensuring legislative stability.
