Carney says Canadians will decide their future after Elon Musk expresses support for separatism
Carney said Canadians will decide the country’s future after Musk urged Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan to leave Canada.
On Wednesday, Elon Musk posted on social media suggesting Quebec, Alberta, and Saskatchewan should separate from Canada, arguing they would be better off.
Support for Quebec independence remains at about 30%, according to McGill University professor Daniel Béland, who noted the Parti won about 28% of the popular vote Monday but fell short of a majority.
Pushing back on Thursday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney insisted Canada's future will be decided by Canadians, criticizing interference from 'foreign governments and large tech firms that think they can tell us what to do.'
Responding to the calls for separation, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said she will vote to remain in Canada, while Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe replied to Musk on social media with a single word.
Smith noted that federal government cooperation has helped address Albertans' concerns, as the province prepares for an October 19 vote on whether to remain in Canada or pursue separation.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Thursday that it will be Canadians who decide the future of their country, attacking Elon Musk's calls for Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan to become independent from Canada.
