Serbian Patriarch Porfirije today congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election as the head of the Roman Catholic Church, emphasizing that the Council of Cardinals "recognized in him a worthy successor to the blessed memory of Pope Francis, who will remain in the best memory in our personal and collective memory of the Serbian people," the Serbian Orthodox Church announced.

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was elected today as the new Pope under the name Leo XIV, was in Belgrade last year, where he participated in the plenary assembly of the Council of Bishops' Conferences of Europe and met with Serbian Patriarch Porphyry.
