Regional officials say preliminary studies show the proposed wells could affect Kalamalka Lake, prompting a precautionary delay on irrigation relief for orchardists.
- The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee rejected a proposal from orchardists David Geen and John Byland to drill three wells into the Coldstream aquifer, citing concerns over potential impacts to Kalamalka Lake.
- Facing Stage 3 water restrictions and a 70 per cent reduction in agricultural water allocations, Geen and Byland proposed the infrastructure project to keep their trees alive and relieve pressure on other sources by 2027.
- A recent preliminary Regional District of North Okanagan study found a likely meaningful connection between the aquifer and Kalamalka Lake, prompting RDNO general manager Zee Marcolin to stress, "We cannot risk impacting Kal Lake."
- While GVAC directors supported the staff recommendation, agricultural representative Tom Ouchi opposed the move, calling the decision "quite frankly shocking" as Geen and Byland confirmed they will forge ahead with their provincial application.
- Greater Vernon Water staff are now working to obtain a groundwater study to further assess surface-water interactions and develop a sustainable management plan for the Coldstream Valley aquifer while protecting Kalamalka Lake.
