NHL Trade: Carolina Hurricanes Acquire Ducks' John Carlson
Carolina Hurricanes secure exclusive negotiating rights for top defenseman John Carlson, aiming to sign the veteran before free agency opens Wednesday.
- On Saturday, the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes acquired the rights to unrestricted free agent defenseman John Carlson from the Anaheim Ducks. Carolina sent the 192nd overall pick and defenseman Kyle Masters to Anaheim to secure exclusive negotiation rights.
- The 36-year-old veteran is a two-time All-Star who spent 17 seasons with the Washington Capitals before Anaheim acquired him at the 2025-26 trade deadline. Carlson has recorded 170 goals and 615 assists over 1,159 career regular-season games.
- Per PuckPedia, the Hurricanes have $11.1 million in salary cap space, while Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman estimates a potential contract could cost around $9 million per year. Carolina must sign the defenseman before free agency commences on Wednesday.
- The Hurricanes currently have five defensemen under contract: Jalen Chatfield, Shayne Gostisbehere, Andre Miller, Jaccob Slavin, and Sean Walker. Adding the veteran could alter the team's defensive structure before the market opens.
- Should the champions sign the defenseman, speculation may arise regarding the future of Nikishin. Prior to the NHL draft, Frank Seravalli of Hockey 24/7 reported that Carolina offered Nikishin and a pick to the Winnipeg Jets for superstar goalie Connor Hellebuyck.
