Canadians being asked to complete 2026 census as letters are mailed out
Households and farm businesses will receive instructions and a 16-digit code as the census moves online, with fines of up to $500 for noncompliance.
Statistics Canada began mailing yellow envelopes to every address in Canada on Monday, launching the 2026 Census with households required to complete the online questionnaire by May 12 using a secure 16-digit access code.
Under the federal Statistics Act, every household and farm operator is legally obligated to participate in the census, which occurs every five years; refusal or false information can result in fines of up to $500.
Simultaneously, Statistics Canada is collecting data on Canada's farming industry through the Census of Agriculture, offering forms in 28 languages while confirming all gathered information is kept confidential.
Collected data directly informs government and business allocation of funding for critical services including health care, education and child care; households not responding by May 12 will be contacted by Statistics Canada workers.
"For over a century, Canadians have relied on the census to understand how our country is changing over time," said Andrew Loranger, Canada's chief statistician, urging residents to complete questionnaires for accurate representation.
