Smithfield Foods has temporarily suspended operations at its meat processing plant in Monmouth because of technical issues at the facility’s wastewater treatment system. Company officials say they expect operations to resume soon. The Monmouth plant employs about 1,400 people. Smithfield, one of the nation’s largest packaged meat producers, says the shutdown is temporary while the wastewater issue is addressed.
