Canada spy agency says it foiled potentially 'lethal threats' by Iran
CSIS disrupted multiple lethal Iranian threats targeting Canada-based critics and stopped Russian agents from illegally procuring Canadian technology, CSIS director Dan Rogers said.
- This year, Dan Rogers, director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, said CSIS foiled potentially lethal threats by Iran against people in Canada whom Tehran views as enemies in a rare Thursday update.
- After Canada designated the IRGC last year and cut diplomatic ties in 2012, Tehran condemned the moves, worsening relations that help explain targeting, CSIS said.
- In an uncommon public speech, Rogers said, `In particularly alarming cases over the last year, we've had to reprioritize our operations to counter the actions of Iranian intelligence services and their proxies who have targeted individuals they perceive as threats to their regime`.
- Dan Rogers said CSIS prevented Russian illicit procurement networks from acquiring Canadian goods and technologies by warning Canadian companies about Europe-based front companies linked to Russian agents, leading firms to deny purchases this year.
- CSIS had said in August it was probing Iranian threats and Canada's criticism of Russia and its 2022 invasion of Ukraine reflects a wider security posture facing multiple state threats.
