Channel Islands National Park Opens New Campground on Santa Cruz Island
The six-site campground is the first new one on Santa Cruz Island in decades and will cost $15 per night, officials said.
- On August 17, the National Park Service announced that the new Prisoners Harbor Campground on Santa Cruz Island will open to visitors on August 27. The Channel Islands National Park facility offers six new campsites.
- Dave Edwards of the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council led volunteers to build the site, the first new campground on the island in decades. Aera Energy, Toad & Co, and Fund for People in Parks funded the project.
- Six campsites accommodate up to four people each for $15 per night. Set in an oak woodland below Eagle Ridge, the site is accessible via a short walk from the Prisoners Harbor Pier.
- Visitors can now hike between Scorpion Anchorage and Prisoners Harbor, creating point-to-point backpacking trips. Experienced kayakers can also paddle between the two harbors for multi-day coastal adventures.
- Superintendent Ethan McKinley noted the campground fulfills the park's goal of expanding visitor opportunities while protecting the island's extraordinary natural resources. Reservations open today, August 18.
