Jacksonville Marine Declared Dead After Falling Overboard the USS Iwo Jima in the Caribbean

Lance Cpl. Oforah's death followed a 72-hour multi-branch search involving five Navy ships and 10 aircraft; circumstances remain under investigation, officials said.

  • On Feb. 10, Lance Cpl. Chukwuemeka E. Oforah was declared deceased after reportedly falling from the USS Iwo Jima on Feb. 7 and a 72-hour search.
  • Earlier this year the USS Iwo Jima joined a large Caribbean buildup that supported operations including the Jan. 3 operation capturing Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, deployed with Battalion Landing Team 3/6, 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit.
  • Search teams used five U.S. Navy ships, the Iwo Jima's 7-meter small boat, and ten aircraft, including MH-60s and a P-8, during the 72-hour rescue effort.
  • Unit commanders said support is being provided to the family, and Col. Tom Trimble said `We are all grieving alongside the Oforah family`; two personnel have minor injuries and both ships sail safely.
  • SOUTHCOM and the 22nd MEU say the incident is under investigation, noting U.S. casualties have been rare despite a larger U.S. naval force operating in the Caribbean.
