California Warns Unvaccinated Person with Measles Traveled Through 6 Counties
- On Friday, the California Department of Public Health warned of measles exposure after an unvaccinated Amtrak passenger traveled through six California counties and was later hospitalized with the highly contagious disease.
- The passenger departed Chicago on September 10, arrived at Los Angeles Union Station on September 12, then traveled through Bakersfield, Stockton, Oroville, and Sacramento before departing Emeryville on September 14 for Denver.
- Assistant State Public Health Officer Dr. Rita Nguyen stated measles can cause permanent brain damage and be fatal, especially for children, while the MMR vaccine is 97% effective with two doses and 93% with one dose.
- People at Union Station between 8 a.m. and noon on Saturday may have been exposed; unimmunized individuals exposed within seven days should contact healthcare providers, while those exposed seven to 21 days ago must stay home for 21 days.
- Nationwide, 3,471 measles cases and four deaths were reported this year as of Friday, with California recording 59 cases across 13 counties; roughly 90% of unvaccinated people exposed to measles will contract the disease.
