Calgary man found guilty of three terrorism-related charges tied to ISIS
Jamal Borhot was convicted for joining ISIS in Syria, performing leadership roles, and recruiting others, ending a five-year investigation and trial, Calgary court records show.
- On Monday, Calgary Justice Corina Dario found Jamal Borhot guilty of three counts of participation in a terrorist group at the Calgary Courts Centre.
- Prosecutors say Borhot travelled to Syria via Frankfurt and Istanbul before joining one of three groups—al Nusra Front, ISIS or al-Qaida—in Turkey, where he trained and fought.
- The Crown described Borhot’s leadership and recruitment activity, presenting evidence of administrative duties and Facebook communications, while Justice Dario found he knowingly supported the Islamic State.
- His trial began in April 2024, lasted 40 days, and included closed-door sessions for national-security reasons, closing a five-year legal odyssey that followed charges in 2020 and Hussein Borhot’s 12-year sentence.
- Large parts of the trial were closed for national-security reasons, with the defence delay application rejected as proceedings at Calgary Courts Centre balanced secrecy and transparency.
