Indian Court Orders Takedown of Documentary on Adani, Modi
Adani Enterprises won an interim injunction after alleging the video contains false defamation claims, and the court ordered platforms to remove related reposts and logs.
On Monday, the Calcutta High Court ordered removal of "The Friendship Files," a 36-minute documentary about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and industrialist Gautam Adani, from social media platforms until January 31, 2027.
Adani Enterprises Limited sought the injunction against tech entrepreneur Sabeer Bhatia, arguing the film was a "dramatised narrative" containing false content rather than substantiated reporting.
Justice Aryak Dutt directed YouTube, X, and Meta to remove the video and disable reposts and shares, ruling the documentary's title "insinuates theft" and lacked substantiated evidence.
Responding on Tuesday, Bhatia challenged the ₹50 crore damage demand, asserting that wealth acquired through alleged wrongdoing does not confer credibility and valuing reputational harm at 0.
The court clarified the order does not restrain constructive criticism or fair reporting on government policy, with hearings scheduled to resume on January 31.
