Caernarfon Air Ambulance base to close next year after court refuses appeal
The Court of Appeal's refusal ends legal challenges to redeploy teams to a new North Wales site despite strong local opposition and 551 missed incidents in 2023-24, charity said.
- On Wednesday , Lady Justice Andrews refused the application at the Court of Appeal, allowing the closure of Caernarfon and Welshpool air ambulance bases to proceed.
- The JCC's majority vote approved closing Welshpool and Caernarfon bases despite Powys Teaching Health Board opposition and fierce resistance from Powys residents since 2022.
- Operational figures and judicial commentary supported the case for reorganisation as the Wales Air Ambulance charity said in 2023-24 it missed 551 incidents and warned `Every incident involved real people with very serious and life-threatening conditions`.
- The decision means the Welshpool base will close early next year, and a charity spokesperson said the reorganisation will save more lives across the country while improving service.
- Campaigners, who lost at the High Court in June this year, vowed to continue pressure and hold decision-makers to account for promised mitigation, the group including Cynthia and Clive Duce said.
