Cabot says proposed golf course would take up more than a third of Cape Breton park
Nova Scotia government ruled Cabot’s plan unreasonable, protecting 2.8 sq km park home to rare species and blocking development of a golf course occupying 35% of the area.
- On Thursday, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston told reporters the Department of Natural Resources decided Cabot golf company's proposal at West Mabou Beach Provincial Park should not proceed, calling the asks unreasonable.
- Cabot proposed an 18‑hole golf course and shop occupying up to 35 per cent of the park's land, submitting this third attempt over the summer; it already operates multiple courses, an 11‑hole short course, restaurants, a 72‑room lodge and nearly 50 villas in Inverness, Cape Breton.
- The park encompasses about 2.8 square kilometres of sand dunes and beaches along the Northumberland Strait and hosts more than a dozen rare species including the piping plover and upswept moonwort.
- Save West Mabou campaigners said they were relieved but remain worried, Official Opposition NDP Leader Claudia Chender praised the decision yet criticized the turmoil, and Liberal House leader Iain Rankin called it "unfortunate".
- Last month, a CBC News reporter revealed the government did not disclose talks with Cabot amid a $1.2‑billion deficit, while Natural Resources Minister Kim Masland said weeks ago she remains open to proposals in other protected areas.
