India Extends Atal Pension Scheme to Provide Social Security to Unorganised Sector Workers

The government will fund Atal Pension Yojana until 2031 to support over 8.66 crore unorganised sector workers with guaranteed pensions from age 60.

  • On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved continuation of the Atal Pension Yojana up to financial year 2030-31.
  • Launched on May 9, 2015, the Atal Pension Yojana was designed to provide old-age income security to workers in the unorganised sector, guaranteeing monthly pensions of Rs 1,000 to 5,000 payable at age 60.
  • As of January 19, 2026, over 8.66 crore subscribers have enrolled under Atal Pension Yojana, with the government saying its national promotion campaign achieved record-breaking participation and contributions collected via savings account auto-debit with flexible intervals.
  • The scheme protects families by transferring pension to subscribers' spouses and the corpus to nominees; Uttar Pradesh led enrolments with over 1.20 crore registrations in Prayagraj, Lucknow, Bareilly, Fatehpur, and Kanpur Nagar.
  • To expand outreach, the government will fund promotional and developmental activities including awareness and capacity building for unorganised workers and provide gap funding to meet viability requirements.
