Cabinet Approves ₹14,500-Crore Scheme to Add 92 GWh Energy Storage Capacity
The scheme will support 30 GWh of battery storage and 60 GWh of pumped hydro as India expands grid capacity for renewable power.
- The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a Rs 17,500 crore Viability Gap Funding Scheme to develop 92 GWh of grid-scale energy storage capacity between FY27 and FY31. The initiative strengthens power sector infrastructure for reliable electricity supply.
- India faces a critical challenge as renewable energy supply fluctuates, necessitating advanced storage to meet a 411 GWh target by 2031-32. This new scheme will support capacity equal to 170% of the country's existing grid-scale energy storage system infrastructure.
- Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated the plan targets 30 GWh for Battery Energy Storage Systems , 60 GWh for Pumped Storage Projects , and 2 GWh for emerging technologies. These systems convert renewable electricity into storable forms.
- The Ministry of Power is already implementing two prior viability gap funding schemes supporting 43.8 GWh of BESS capacity with Rs 9,160 crore in combined financial support. These projects serve 15 states and NTPC Ltd. to optimize transmission infrastructure.
- Implemented over five years, the initiative strengthens grid stability and energy security while advancing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat. This deployment facilitates large-scale renewable integration as India scales up its climate goals.
