£3m Support for Businesses Impacted by Cairngorms Wildfire Announced
Up to £3 million will go to affected businesses through Highland Council as the government seeks to aid recovery from the ongoing blaze.
On Thursday, Economy Secretary Stephen Flynn announced the Scottish Government activated the Bellwin Scheme, providing up to £3 million to the Highland Council for businesses affected by the Cairngorms wildfire.
The blaze began near Aviemore on July 15, devastating 25 square kilometres of land while more than 500 firefighters battled the flames for weeks.
Cairngorms National Park Authority officials indicated the Glenmore area could reopen to the public on Friday, subject to Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmation that hotspot efforts succeeded.
SNP MP Graham Leadbitter urged the UK Government to procure firefighting aircraft, writing to Defence Secretary Wes Streeting that he was "deeply concerned" the UK lacked water-bombing helicopters.
The Bellwin Scheme, a discretionary fund used previously after Storm Desmond and the 2018 cold wave, allows ministers to reimburse local authorities for emergency-related costs.
