Burnham ‘would not take a job in Starmer’s government’ if he wins Makerfield by-election
Burnham said he will stay out of Starmer’s government as Labour faces pressure over a possible leadership challenge and a Manchester mayoral contest.
Andy Burnham will not accept a Cabinet role in Sir Keir Starmer's government if he wins Thursday's Makerfield by-election, according to sources close to the Greater Manchester Mayor.
Earlier, Sir Keir offered an olive branch to Burnham, expressing a desire for him to "play a big part" in the Labour government and signaling a potential Cabinet invitation.
Allies of Burnham suggested he is not interested, claiming he represents a "wind of change for not having been associated" with government failings and viewing the offer as an attempt to neutralize leadership challenges.
Responding to potential threats, Prime Minister Starmer warned Burnham against launching an immediate challenge and stated, "if there is a challenge, then I intend to fight," refusing to walk away from his post.
Meanwhile, Wes Streeting has indicated he is prepared to trigger a leadership contest as early as next week, claiming he has the backing of 80 MPs and accused Starmer of ignoring the party and Cabinet.
