World Has Opportunity To End Iran War After Heavy Republican Losses In US, Says PM
Burnham said the midterm results give leaders a chance to refocus on de-escalation and cost-of-living pressures after Democrats won both chambers, officials said.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham urged US President Donald Trump to resolve the Iran war, citing midterm election results as an "opportunity now to unite" around global cost-of-living pressures.
Democrats seized control of both the Senate and House of Representatives as voters in conservative strongholds like Texas and Kansas shunned the Republican Party, leaving Trump a "failed lame duck president."
The Iran conflict has disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, driving higher energy prices, inflation, and interest rates in the UK according to the Office for Budget Responsibility and the Institute for Fiscal Studies.
Burnham stated, "I'll be working for de-escalation, to make it very clear," emphasizing his goal to see the Strait of Hormuz fully opened again, while acknowledging Trump has accepted the midterm results.
While the Prime Minister pushes for resolution of the Iran war and the conflict in Ukraine, he noted domestic cost-of-living issues remain central to his first three months in Downing Street.
The British leader urged an end to the conflict with Iran to mitigate the impact of the cost of living following political change in the U.S. At the Commonwealth summit, he highlighted the global opportunity to address crucial economic and geopolitical problems.
