Burnham does not rule out wealth tax
Andy Burnham said he is not ruling out tax rises for the super-rich as he reviews the public finances and prepares to meet Donald Trump.
On the prospect of taxing the super rich, incoming Prime Minister Andy Burnham declined to rule out a wealth tax during an interview with Gary Lineker for Goal Hanger, saying 'I'm not going to rule things out right now' as he prepares to take office Monday.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's relationship with President Trump deteriorated over the Iran conflict, leaving Burnham to navigate strained transatlantic relations after Trump recently described him as 'extremely liberal' and 'mayor of a town.'
Burnham told Lineker he believes the UK needs 'a greater sense of fairness' while insisting he does not want to be perceived as someone with 'grudges or agendas,' though he deferred specific tax decisions, stating they 'are not for now. They're for another day.'
Addressing his approach to President Trump, Burnham pledged to be 'very upfront' while respecting the office and the UK-US relationship, saying he would handle disagreements 'in a way that is kind of meeting him where he's at.'
Tory leader Kemi Badenoch attacked Burnham's tax plans, accusing Labour of heading toward a 'summer of chaos,' while Burnham's refusal to use 'genocide' for Gaza's over 70,000 deaths reflects continuity with Starmer's cautious Israel stance.
