Burnham calls for grooming gang ringleader to be deported
Burnham wants ministers to examine every legal route as Ahmed faces release, while victims say his deportation to Pakistan remains barred.
Andy Burnham, the Makerfield MP, vowed to "review all possible options" to deport Rochdale grooming gang ringleader Shabir Ahmed after revelations that a legal loophole prevents his removal.
Probation Service documents indicate Ahmed cannot be removed under the Immigration Act, as he arrived in the country before 1973. The ringleader, known to victims as "Daddy," is scheduled for release after serving 14 years.
Ahmed was convicted in 2012 for multiple rape and sexual offences against young girls. The Immigration Act protects individuals who arrived before 1973 and resided five years before deportation was considered.
The failure to deport men convicted of serious child sex offences has caused deep anger in communities, a Home Office spokeswoman said. This frustration is heaping pressure on politicians to address enforcement gaps.
Burnham faces Reform criticism regarding his record as he prepares to succeed Sir Keir Starmer as prime minister. He previously launched a 2017 child sex abuse review and in 2022 sought government power to deport grooming gang perpetrators.
