Burnham to Look at Rape Trial Changes to Back Victims After Brand Conviction
Burnham said he will study possible legal changes after Rowley backed reform to tackle rape myths and raise conviction rates.
On Thursday, Russell Brand was convicted of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault at Southwark Crown Court. The 51-year-old comedian faces a significant custodial term when sentenced on Monday.
Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley warned on Friday that defense lawyer Ian Winter KC's arguments were 'getting very close to victim blaming.' He backed calls for judges to address rape myths undermining legitimate cases.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated he will review how rape trials are conducted to 'get the conviction rate up.' He refused to rule out changing the law to ensure victims do not feel on trial.
Victims Commissioner Claire Waxman is pushing for a legal duty in the Courts and Tribunals Bill requiring judges to direct juries on rape myths. This aims to ensure consistency in judicial guidance across all trials.
Two further allegations against Brand are under investigation, with police expecting additional victims may come forward. The Prime Minister clarified he had 'no idea' about the comedian's wrongdoing when he previously praised him in 2014.
