PM Andy Burnham says Russell Brand's crimes are 'horrific'
Jury found the comedian guilty on one rape count and three sexual assault counts after testimony from multiple women and years of reporting.
On Thursday, a Southwark Crown Court jury convicted 51-year-old comedian Russell Brand of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault, finding him guilty of crimes against a fan, radio worker, and television worker.
Following a 2023 investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4 Dispatches that detailed accusations of rape and sexual abuse, victims came forward revealing how Brand used his fame to force sexual activity, sometimes within seconds of meeting.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham described Brand's actions as "horrifying," telling Times Radio he would like to praise the "courage to speak out" of the women victims who testified against the comedian.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley confirmed investigations are ongoing into two additional allegations and stated he would not be surprised if "many more" victims came forward following the conviction.
Brand will spend the weekend in custody before returning to court on Monday to learn his prison sentence, after Mr Justice Bennathan refused bail due to concerns he would flee instead of appearing.
