Bungie apologizes to fans, unseals ‘Destiny’ content vault, tries to convince the world it’s still Bungie
Bungie says it will restore vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations and raids while expanding Marathon into a deeper survival experience.
- On Monday, Bungie studio head Poria Torkan and head of product Josh Deane announced the studio is "absolutely not done with Destiny," pledging to restore vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids to the game.
- This reversal follows a difficult year for Bungie, which laid off at least 290 employees in June after announcing the end of active support for Destiny 2; the studio acknowledged its past decision to remove vaulted content damaged player trust.
- Developers cautioned that "bringing back this content is not as simple as restoring old files," as teams must update lighting and combat systems to meet modern standards before content launches.
- Bungie leadership also addressed Marathon, admitting it "did not reach as many players as we had hoped," with the extraction shooter averaging around 1,390 active players while the team plans to evolve it into a "deeper survival experience."
- While the studio calls Destiny "foundational" to its future, executives acknowledged that trust must be earned through consistent execution, with plans to share more details about unvaulting efforts in the coming months.
