- DeChambeau attributed his position partly to inconsistent putting and a costly tee shot into deep rough that led to a bogey on the ninth hole.
- He opened with a birdie on the par-5 10th but failed to capitalize on two other par 5s and three-putted from 50 feet on the 15th hole.
- DeChambeau said, "It easily could be 7, 8 under right now" and expressed confidence that a 64 or 65 score remains possible on Saturday.
- Despite mistakes, DeChambeau remains optimistic about improving his position Saturday to contend strongly for a second major title within a year.
