Avalanche Acquire Former First-Round Pick in Trade with Bruins
Boston adds a versatile depth forward with 49 NHL games while moving on from a 2021 first-round pick who appeared in only 12 games.
On Saturday, the Boston Bruins traded Fabian Lysell, their 2021 first-round draft pick, to the Colorado Avalanche for the rights to restricted free agent Ivan Ivan, a 23-year-old center from Czechia.
General Manager Don Sweeney acknowledged that Lysell "hasn't fully grasped" what it takes to play at the NHL level, with the winger appearing in just 12 games over four pro seasons in Boston.
While Lysell recorded 163 points in 219 AHL games with Providence, Ivan arrives with 49 games of NHL experience, accumulating five goals and nine points with the Avalanche.
Both players are restricted free agents requiring qualifying offers by Wednesday to avoid unrestricted free agency; Sweeney confirmed the Bruins will tender an offer to Ivan.
Bruins coach Marco Sturm provided input on acquiring Ivan, who offers versatility as a center and winger to help address the team's bottom-six forward depth.
