OpenAI taps Broadcom to build its first AI processor in latest chip deal

  • On Monday, OpenAI announced it partnered with Broadcom Inc., with OpenAI designing AI processors and Broadcom developing and deploying the systems.
  • After striking deals with Nvidia Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices , OpenAI is moving to design and deploy its own chips to reduce reliance on costly Nvidia processors.
  • Beginning in the second half of next year, the companies will deploy chips consuming 10 gigawatts, finishing the rollout by the end of 2029.
  • For Broadcom, the deal vaults it deeper into the booming AI market and leverages its networking technology, while observers warn rapid build-out may strain electricity providers.
  • OpenAI, which serves more than 800 million weekly users, last week secured an up to 10% stake in Advanced Micro Devices as Nvidia Corp. pledged up to $100 billion.
