British troops deployed to Israel to 'monitor Gaza ceasefire' after US request
- On Monday, Britain sent a senior commander and a small team of UK military planning officers to Israel to help monitor a fragile Gaza ceasefire after a United States request.
- Yvette Cooper had said the UK had `no plans` to send soldiers before John Healey called the ceasefire deal brokered by Donald Trump an `opportunity for a long-term peace`.
- The British officer will act as deputy within a US-led Civil-Military Coordination Centre that includes troops from Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates, while the United States sends up to 200 troops to Israel.
- The British contingent will not operate inside the Gaza Strip while the ceasefire faces pressure, and one official said the team will monitor ceasefire implementation and Gaza's civilian transition.
- The New York Times reported on Tuesday that countries are nervous about deploying troops into Gaza while Hamas remains armed, amid over 50 deaths reported by the Hamas-run health ministry.
