UKMTO receives report of fire on cargo vessel 36 nautical miles north of Dubai

UKMTO said the crew was safe as regional maritime threats drove oil prices up more than 5%, officials said.

  • On Monday, a cargo ship caught fire off the coast of the United Arab Emirates as the nation warned of incoming attacks from Iran. The British military's United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center confirmed the blaze was in the engine room, with the crew accounted for.
  • Iran has effectively controlled the Strait of Hormuz since the war began in late February, causing global fuel prices to spike. The U.S. has enforced a naval blockade on Iranian ports since April 13, forcing at least 49 commercial ships to turn back.
  • President Donald Trump announced "Project Freedom" on Sunday to guide ships through the strait, warning that Iranian efforts "will, unfortunately, have to be dealt with forcefully." Central Command reported two American-flagged merchant ships successfully transited the waterway.
  • Maj. Gen. Ali Abdollahi warned that any foreign military force entering the strait would be targeted, while Iran claimed it struck a U.S. vessel—a report Central Command denied. Tehran views the U.S. effort as violating the fragile three-week ceasefire.
  • The Joint Maritime Information Center warned that navigating close to usual routes is "extremely hazardous" due to unmapped mines. Jakob Larsen of the International Maritime Council questioned the sustainability of the U.S. effort, noting it carries significant risk of renewed hostilities.
