British man infected with Ebola in DR Congo arrives in UK for treatment
A UK government spokesperson said the risk to the public remains low as specialists treat the infected health worker.
A health worker who tested positive for Ebola arrived at RAF Northolt and was transported to a specialist infectious diseases unit at The Royal Free Hospital in north London.
Driven by the Bundibugyo virus, the current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has led to more than 5,000 deaths and more than 10,000 confirmed cases since starting in May.
Three health workers were treated at The Royal Free Hospital following the 2014 and 2015 West Africa outbreak, with none of the four confirmed UK cases resulting in a death.
World Health Organization experts recommend adding two new candidate drugs from the University of Oxford, the Serum Institute of India, and Moderna to clinical trials while officials maintain the risk to the public remains low.
Beyond the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ebola cases have been confirmed in Kenya, Nigeria, and Uganda; the virus spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids and the current outbreak maintains a 48.6% fatality rate.
