British Airways to offer free high-speed wifi on all flights with Starlink deal

British Airways will equip over 500 aircraft with free Starlink Wi-Fi providing fast, low-latency internet from boarding to landing to enhance passenger experience.

  • On Thursday, British Airways announced it will provide free onboard Wi‑Fi powered by Starlink, and International Airlines Group agreed to equip more than 500 aircraft, with rollout starting next year.
  • To stand out from rivals, British Airways says the project is part of a 7.9 billion digital transformation announced last year to differentiate on short‑haul routes.
  • Technically, Starlink relies on thousands of SpaceX low-Earth orbit satellites enabling connections across oceans, with BA advertising speeds up to 250 Mbps, latency under 100 milliseconds, and direct connection via the BA app and seatback screens.
  • Passengers will receive complimentary, gate-to-gate super-fast Wi-Fi enabling streaming, video meetings and large file transfers during flights, and the free rollout positions British Airways as a European aviation leader against rivals such as United Airlines and Air France.
  • Installation begins in 2026 with Airbus A320 and Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft, other IAG brands will follow soon after, alongside a new BA app next year and first class cabin upgrade.
