BrewDog co-founder Watt to plough £10m into rescue bid for brewer
James Watt plans a £10 million personal investment to restructure BrewDog, aiming to protect retail investors' stakes and preserve key UK assets including the Ellon base.
- On Saturday, James Watt, BrewDog co-founder, launched a bid to retake control as restructuring specialists AlixPartners lead a fire-sale process and Sky News reported he would invest 10 million.
- After years of losses, BrewDog faced steep market setbacks as it haemorrhaged cash for five years and last year almost 2,000 pubs axed its beers while it closed bars and its spirits business.
- Watt’s proposal would keep core pubs and the Ellon manufacturing base, carry over about a fifth of retail investors’ ownership, and reinstate the Real Living Wage at 13.45 and 14.80 in London.
- There is no guarantee a sale will occur amid multiple final bidders, with speculation warning more than 200,000 retail investors could be wiped out and uncertainty over US, Australia and Germany operations.
- BrewDog’s crowdfunding history and the 2017 sale of 22% to TSG, which created preference shares, frame Watt’s bid amid past staff allegations and governance controversies.
