Australia's Optus Suffers Emergency Call Outage, Says Vandals Cut Fibre

More than 14,000 customers lost mobile voice and data service due to an aerial fibre break, disrupting emergency Triple Zero calls in southeast Melbourne, Optus said.

  • On Wednesday morning, Optus confirmed more than 14,000 customers in Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula lost mobile voice and data due to an 'aerial fibre break', which is under investigation.
  • Following outages across the country in recent months, a scheduled firewall upgrade in South Australia on September 18 caused a communications outage that Optus chief executive Stephen Rue blamed on human error.
  • Regular calls remained largely unaffected, but about 600 Triple Zero calls were blocked and the Optus website warned emergency calls only work via other networks or WiFi.
  • The government said it was closely monitoring the outage with early signs of vandalism, and Optus says it is working to rectify the situation, while Melissa McIntosh demanded a full independent inquiry and said `must stop`.
  • $100m fine in September places the company under scrutiny, with Optus also facing a Senate inquiry after a disastrous triple-0 failure disrupted emergency calls.
