Small Sea Plane Crashes in Woods Near St. John's, N.L., Injuring Both Men on Board
Two men escaped the wreckage and were taken to hospital with injuries not believed serious, while federal investigators examine the crash.
A Merlin GT plane lost power and crashed Saturday near Paddy's Pond, roughly 15 kilometres southwest of St. John's, while attempting to land on water.
Emergency crews from the St. John's Regional Fire Department and Royal Newfoundland Constabulary responded shortly after 7 p.m. to locate the wreckage roughly 150 metres from the Trans Canada Highway.
One man walked out of the woods to the highway where an ambulance waited, while the second required helicopter assistance to reach a clearing near shore.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has launched an investigation into the crash, which caused extensive damage to the aircraft according to authorities.
Westbound lanes of the Trans Canada Highway and Paddy's Pond Road were closed during the rescue operation; emergency personnel have since cleared the scene.
