BREAKING NEWS: BOJ chief hospitalized, to be absent from monetary policy meeting next week
Deputy governors will chair the meeting as the BOJ weighs a widely expected rate hike to 1.0 percent, officials and analysts said.
On Wednesday, Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda was hospitalized for an infected liver cyst and will miss the June 15 to 16 policy meeting, his first absence since 1998.
The BOJ is widely expected to raise interest rates next week to a 31-year high of 1.0 percent, countering inflationary pressures from the Iran war and Middle East crisis.
Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino will chair the two-day meeting beginning Monday, while Deputy Governor Uchida will conduct the post-meeting press conference; Ueda will submit written views without voting rights.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has voiced reservations regarding the rate-hike plans, though Nomura Securities strategist Mari Iwashita stated the hospitalization is unlikely to affect next week's decision.
Ueda is expected to remain hospitalized for about two weeks while working remotely, with plans to attend the July 30 to 31 policy meeting upon recovery.
